If the terrain demands a mirror-sight compass, the Expedition S is your ideal companion. SILVA Expedition S features an easy-to-handle case, silicone rubber feet for precision map work, a removable safety scale lanyard, luminous markings for nighttime use, a magnifying glass, map measurement scales in mm or inches, 1:25,000, 1:50,000, and GPS scales—plus a built-in adjuster for magnetic declination (including permanent local adjustment). The Expedition S can also map to 1:40,000 and comes with a clinometer for measuring slope angle and a 45-degree angle assist on the mirror-sight function.

This compass features a mirror that allows you to see the compass face and the background at the same time. The fact that the compass face can be seen while the reference point is aligned makes mirror compasses more desirable for taking accurate bearings. A mirror-sighted compass is at its best in open terrain where you need to determine direction over long distances.

The slope map is ideal for both detecting avalanche risk and determining the difficulty of your trip. Knowing the slope allows you to also assess any additional distance you may need to travel due to the gradient. Always be careful on steep terrain. The risk of avalanches increases if the slope is steeper than 30 degrees. The slope map will help you detect this risk.

This compass model is equipped with a removable scale cord made of recycled PET, which functions like a ruler. The scale cord has two scales on it; 1:25 and 1:50, making it easy to measure the distance of your hike. Since it is soft and pliable, it is easy to place directly on your route on the map when you are in the field or when planning your next adventure.
