LEOPARD TANK

The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. It is armed with a 120 mm smoothbore cannon and is powered by a V12 twin-turbo diesel engine. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and twelve other European countries, as well as several non-European countries, including Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Singapore and Turkey. The Leopard 2 has seen combat in Kosovo with the German Army and in Afghanistan with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) with Dutch, Danish, and Canadian forces, and in Syria with the Turkish Armed Forces.

The tank has two main development phases: the original models up to the Leopard 2A4, which have vertical turret armour, and the improved phase, namely the Leopard 2A5 and later versions, which feature appliqué armour on the turret in an arrow-shaped configuration and other improvements. All models feature a digital fire control system with laser rangefinders, a fully stabilised main gun and coaxial machine gun, and an advanced night vision system (early vehicles used a low-light-level television system; thermal imaging was introduced later). The tank is capable of engaging moving targets while moving over rough terrain.
