The Vegvisir, also known as the rune compass or Viking compass/Norse compass consisting of eight Viking rune staves, is a symbol of protection and guidance believed to have been used as a compass by the Vikings. The word vegvisir means "guide" and "signpost" in Icelandic.
Although it is commonly known as the Viking compass and associated by some people with the voyages that the Vikings made around the world during the Viking Age, there is quite a bit of debate regarding the origin of the Vegvisir.
