The Sterling Rescue Figure 8 is designed for high-angle rescue work. The R8 is larger than a standard figure 8, which helps the device dissipate heat better and is easier to use with larger diameter ropes.
The "ears" or "horns" will provide additional friction for the rope when rappelling or lowering heavier loads and can also be used when tying down.
