Yggdrasil (from Old Norse Yggdrasill /ˈyɡɡˌdrɑsell/), in Norse cosmology, is a huge and central sacred tree. Around it exists everything else, including the Nine Worlds.
Yggdrasil is attested in the Poetic Edda compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and in the Prose Edda written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both sources, Yggdrasil is a huge ash tree that is at the center of the cosmos and considered very holy. The gods travel daily to Yggdrasil to meet for their business, the traditional governing assemblies. Yggdrasil's branches extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far into other places; one at the well Urðarbrunnr in the heavens, one at the spring Hvergelmir, and another at the well Mímisbrunnr. Creatures live on Yggdrasil, including the dragon Níðhöggr, a nameless eagle, and the stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr, and Duraþrór.
Scholars generally consider Hoddmímis holt, Mímameiðr, and Læraðr to be alternative names for the tree. The tree is an example of sacred trees and groves in Germanic paganism and mythology, and scholars of Germanic philology have long debated its implications.
